Charles Heidsieck rose 1996 vintage is undoubtedly a champagne of passion. The impressive collaboration of champagne and red wine – both from the 1996 vintage, of course – it is universally considered one of the most delightful of the past 30 years.
Recognisable by its pearly sheen, Charles Heidsieck rose 1996 exudes a powerful pink dress and glistening quality that soon develops into a nose that is both subtle and floral with its notes of undergrowth, peony and rose. Several seconds later, a surprising new set of flavours are stirred, with redcurrant, candied cherry and stewed strawberries offering a strong foundation. The experience is sealed as a grand one with a touch of cinnamon spice.
And now we arrive at the all-important palate, and it is here where Charles Heidsieck rose 1996asserts itself with a round silkiness, followed by a basket of berries on the nose. Follow this with sour cherries, strawberries and more currants – not forgetting the pairing of licorice – and you have all the ingredients for a balanced palate, ending in a sweet brown sugar finish that is tender, romantic and pleasant in its freshness.
