Sometimes love is at the core of a Champagne company, and other times a different motive is the reason for the beginnings of a fine House. In the case of Pol Roger, it was a necessity to provide for his family that drove him to begin what would become a journey filled with jubilation and seasons of change. Pol Roger's Father was very ill at the time and the future didn't look good, so it was this Son who set out to make his Father proud and turn the family's misfortune around.
Ay is the place where Pol Roger decided to begin his fledgling business, and once established the House grew in a way that nobody could have foreseen. In 1851, with this success proving too much for the presently small venue to take, the House moved out to Champagne stronghold Epernay. Within the space of five years, Pol Roger knew what he had to do to evolve the House further. He began by increasing the production of Champagne Brut – something which would later develop into a much loved drink all over the World.
To this day, the House of Pol Roger remains family run and owned – something which few top Champagne houses can honestly say in this age of increasing demand and commerce. The House owns just under 90 hectares of premium land in Epernay, as well as a sizeable plot in the Côte des Blancs region. It should come as little surprise to the Champagne lover, then, that its cellars cover a vast area. Little do many unsuspecting people know it, but beneath the streets of this famous Champagne institute lie some of the deepest and most suitable cellars anywhere around.
It is the cellars' location, of course, which makes for such wonderful attributes – the kind that all Champagne must have to be marked as the best: bubbles laced with flair and persistence are just one of these qualities, in a Champagne which sells as many as 15 million bottles each and every single year.
